The Whole Musician Workshop: About WMW

About The Whole Musician Workshop

The Whole Musician Workshop is an innovative and holistic musical craft and career development center.

Guided by Joshua Pearl, we address traditional music education subjects such as songwriting, music theory, history, technology, career development, promotion, and instrumental technique. We also address what is usually left out of music education such as the underlying principles of self-expression, deep professional fulfillment, and personal growth.

Our philosophy is that artists are most fulfilled when the professional, personal and artistic aspects of their lives are in alignment.

To achieve this synergistic result, we help songwriters, instrumentalists, recording artists and performers deepen their listening skills, expand their understanding of the language of music, and take their unique musical expression and contribution to the next level.

Through teleworkshops, home-based artist development courses, Pre-Production Retreats and customized Whole Musician programs, we address a wide variety of topics relevant to the lifestyle and challenges of being an independent musician, such as:

• Having more time to devote to your music
• Creating a support system for your career and musical endeavors
• Balancing your creative needs with your physical, mental, and emotional health
• Achieving both artistic and professional success
• Expanding your knowledge of music theory and recording techniques
• Improving your songwriting and composition skills
• Breaking through musical limitations
• Making a lasting positive contribution to the lives of others through your music
• Bringing your self-expression to the next level
• Attracting your ideal audience
• Transcending category and genre
• Clarifying your deeper purpose, visions and goals

Joshua Pearl - Director

Joshua Pearl has a rich and diverse background in music production and artist development. He brings a sensitivity to the psychology of artists and the spiritual dimension of musical expression, as well as an acute understanding of the creative process.

As Director of the Whole Musician Workshop, Joshua has helped hundreds of musicians clarify their career path and hone in their craft. He is the author of the forthcoming book, The Whole Musician-An Artist's Guide To Musical Fulfillment, Mastery, and Success.

A classically trained pianist, Joshua formed the foundation of the Whole Musician methodology at Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music where he studied Piano Performance and Educational Theory. He expanded his knowledge of global music traditions while living for many years in Kyoto, Japan where he was certified by the Ikuta school for his studies of traditional Japanese music on the koto. While in Japan he founded, produced, directed and performed in Crosscurrents, a multi-cultural collaborative concert series.

Another significant influence on Joshua's work has been his involvement in the world of musical and non-musical theater. His theater experience includes work on Broadway, off-Broadway, and summer stock where he has performed in a number of roles including composer, arranger, orchestrator, keyboardist and musical director.

Joshua has worked with a wide range of well-known artists such as: Levon Helm (The Band), Kate Pierson (The B-52s), Tony Award winner Lillias White, Peter Schikele (PDQ Bach), and Director Arthur Storch, among others.

As director of The Whole Musician Workshop, Joshua is committed to using his diverse musical background in service of developing the music of songwriters, composers, recording artists, and musicians of all styles and backgrounds regardless of genre.
